Project Ziploc: Marines Say "Thank You"

On Thursday, November 13, Merrick Woods played host to the U. S. Marines of the 2nd Battalion based in Garden City. It was a happy conclusion to a special project called “Operation Ziploc”. The Marines were stationed in Iraq last year, and were wildly surprised to receive care packages sent by our Merrick Woods families. Overall, our families sent over 250 lbs. of food and supplies that the Marines greatly appreciated. It was now their turn to “thank” us.

Dressed in army fatigues, the men brought special equipment and army gear for the children to try out and try on. The children were enthralled by their stories of how they had to camouflage themselves and use code words to contact each other. The men were visibly touched as the entire school stood to say the “Pledge of Allegiance” and sing “My Country ‘tis of Thee” and “You’re A Grand Old Flag”. It was a fitting ending and heartwarming tribute to some of our and America’s “finest”.
