In our Kindergarten Enrichment class we had a lot of fun learning about and celebrating the Chinese New Year. First we read two books: My First Chinese New Year (by Joan Holub) and Dragon Dance (by Karen Katz). After reading them, we became more aware of some of the customs and traditions that the Chinese people follow as they prepare for their New Year.

According to Chinese tradition, the color RED brings good luck and happiness. For the New Year, Chinese people wear red clothing, they decorate with red decorations, and Chinese children are given money in red envelopes. Special Chinese foods are prepared and eaten, and there is a spectacular parade with colorful Chinese floats, Chinese music, and of course the Dragon, which is also a sign of good luck!!

Our class made Chinese Dragon paper bag puppets and did a dragon dance around the classroom with Chinese music playing in the background. To complete our celebration we enjoyed a snack of Chinese noodles and duck sauce.
