Miss Kathy and Miss Maria
This month, Room 11 celebrated the birthday of Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr. We had the opportunity to talk about how people should
treat one another, and how even though people can look different on the
outside, how they are all alike on the inside.
One activity that we did to prove this was reading the book “It’s
Okay to Be Different.” After reading the book, we asked a couple
of children that were wearing the same color outfit to come up to the
front of the room. We then proceeded to ask the children what was the
same about them. Many answers came up. A few being hair color, gender,
and both wearing sneakers. Next we asked what was different. A couple
of answers to that were that one child was taller than the other and one
of them had flowers on their top.
Next we took out a brown egg and a white egg and had the children examine
them. We asked them what was the same and different about them. Some answers
were different color, different weight, and finally both were eggs and
the same shape. The next step to this activity was to ask them what they
thought the insides might look like. The same or different? The children
were very split on this answer. Later, we cracked them open and explained
how even though the eggs looked different on the outside they are the
same on the inside, just like us.
