Room 11 AM
Miss Kathy and Miss Maria

During the month of April, the children in Room 11 learned all about the stages a caterpillar goes through before it changes into a butterfly.  We started off by reading the book “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” by Eric Carle.  Next, we took a paper leaf and put a pom pom on one side to act like the egg.  After that we took a popsicle stick and glued pom poms down on that, then glued the whole stick onto the opposite side of the leaf.  This was our caterpillar.  Later, we took a toilet paper role tube and glued cotton around it to replicate a cocoon.  Finally, we made butterflies by coloring with markers on a coffee filter, wetting it to make the colors run and clipping it with a clothes pin.  Then Miss Kathy and Miss Maria cut out shapes to act like all the food the caterpillar ate in the book, so the children were able to reenact the whole story when it was read to them again and again.  They really loved this.  Next month we will be getting a real butterfly box in the room so the children will be able to watch real caterpillars change day by day into beautiful butterflies.  Then we will take them outside and let them fly free.
